There is an explicit explanation of the fierce-looking Yamdoots who come to tie the soul and drag the soul away, then the soul is reminded of the sins he/she committed in their lifetime. Garud Puran ki Katha also mentions about the location of Yamlok (hell). It talks about 24 types of punishment for different types of sins and it also mentions the encounter of the soul with God Yama (God of death).
The souls with too many bad Karmas (deeds) goes through a terrible time going from one hell to another. The underlying philosophy of life after death is to make us aware that since death is inevitable, be prepared for it. It also educates us on how we should be living a life being aware of our deeds, Karmas. We will need to pay for every bad Karma and sin we commit here on earth. So, Karma and Dharma in one’s lifetime are significant in deciding the soul’s path after death. And ultimately it also teaches us not to be too attached to anyone or anything.
